Welcome to the homepage of the Department for German Studies!

The Department for German Studies of Faculty of Arts has a long tradition at University of Maribor. Today, it is the central German studies educational and research center in Northeast Slovenia. Basic fields of study and university education are:

• contemporary German language,
• older and modern literature of the German speaking area and 
• didactics of German language and literature.

We offer several study programs on 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bologna cycles, and we educate:

• a Germanist with elementary knowledge of German language, literature and culture enabled for numerous profesions in connection with interlingual and intercultural interaction,
• a teacher of German language as foreign language for all degrees of education (pre-school education, elementary, secondary and tertiary education, private forms of education)
• a researcher i nthe field of German language or German histroy of literature.

Basic guideline of our educational work is the formation of professionally funded, critically thinking, responsible, tolerant and humanistically oriented mind. Didactic principles leading us are based on diversity of forms and methods of learning and teaching. We pay special attention to active cooperation of students, the use of up-to-date information technology and international mobility of students and teachers.

Department for German Studies is also an important information point for everything in connection with German language and literature of the German speaking area. We closely cooperate with cultural institutions in the town, region and the state, with competent ministries and related universities and research institutions at home and abroad.

Times of globalization and intensive cross-border cooperation set new challenges for the Department for German Studies regarding education and research. It is our belief that with new study programs and teaching contents being in the foreground of German research attention also elsewhere, we follow the development and needs of the time, in which we are living.
